Choosing a Harvester

When you’re looking at acres of a crop that’s ready for harvest, you might want to consider making doing all this by hand a thing of the past. It can be expensive and time-consuming to employ manual labor for harvesting, so instead, consider upgrading to a harvester. These are big purchases that can be a game-changer for your productivity and yield. They can also be expensive, so you’ll want to get your purchase right on the first try. Of course, the most important factor in choosing a harvester is your crop. If you get the wrong type of harvester, you’ll probably lose precious time and might even damage some of your crops. Many harvesters will be built to gather a specific type of crop, or group of crops, like grain or corn or hops, etc. Make sure you come in with a list of crops so we can ensure you’re getting the right machine for the job. You’ll be focusing on what’s known as the header, which is where the crop is gathered. Some crops will require specialized harvesters, like grape harvesters for grapes. Big farms don’t necessarily mean big harvesters. You’ll want to focus on fitting your fields primarily. Because of this, bigger isn’t always the better option. Consider how you plant your crops, what you can afford to maintain, and how big or how small you’ll need to go in order to maximize efficiency.

Choosing the right brand can sometimes be a matter of personal preference, although you’ll want to make sure it’s a reputable manufacturer with a history of successful harvesting equipment. Companies like John Deere and New Holland offer great models, even if they’re at a higher price. Over time, you might find there are certain companies you just prefer over others, but until then, you might want to take the time to research manufacturer reviews to get an idea of how other harvester owners did (or didn’t) like their machine.
