Now that summer is long gone and winter is well on its way, it’s time to think about how you can take care of your lawn over the colder months to ensure that it’s green and supple come springtime. Of course, you need the right knowledge and the right tools for the job to make sure it’s done quickly and efficiently.

Burrows Tractor, with three Pacific Northwest locations, is proud to be your local lawn equipment dealer. We can supply you with both the tools and the information on what you should be doing and how you should do it so that your winter lawn care is a cinch!

Make Use of Good Weather

On the western side of the Cascades, rain is a given, especially during the winter. Snow is much less of a concern unless you’re in the mountains, so we’re fortunate on that account, compared to icier regions of the country. On the eastern side, drier days are more likely. Take advantage of any clear days to do whatever maintenance tasks you can. Check the weather forecast and make some plans so that you know what to do as soon as there’s a nice enough day to do it.

Aerate Your Yard

Just because we don’t get a lot of snow doesn’t mean it can’t get pretty frosty here, and we can even experience ice. If a cold snap results in frost settling on the ground, then that layer of frost can form a seal that prevents fresh air from reaching your soil. Try to aerate your lawn well in advance of those frosty days to keep your soil fresh.

Avoid Walking On Your Grass

Lawns are made to be walked on, of course, but they’re much more delicate during the winter months. You can help to preserve your yard by using sidewalks instead of walking all over the grass. If you must walk on the grass, try to avoid trampling a path into it and vary where you walk to prevent doing too much damage to one particular spot.

Clear Away Debris

Allowing loads of dead leaves and tree branches and other debris to lay on your lawn all winter can damage it. The layers of debris that pile up in the fall can form a barrier that prevents your lawn from getting air and sun. So make sure that you rake up and clear away as much debris as you can, and avoid leaving equipment like tools or lawn mowers on your grass, as these can create dead patches.

Prune Your Plants

Your perennial plants like flower bushes and fruit trees can benefit significantly from a little winter pruning to keep them in good shape. The lack of leaves can make it easier to see what needs to be pruned, too. Cutting away dead branches and twigs can help your plants to be healthier once the weather warms up again.

Prevent Snow Build-Up

Many areas have seen more snow in recent years, even here in Oregon and Washington, and it can really take a toll on your lawn. Try to clear away heavy snows, especially around your more delicate plants and trees. You may even want to put protective wire mesh over your younger trees if you live in a snow-prone region.
